Card present and card not present: what changes for your channels
The same transaction behaves differently when the card is in the machine and when it is not. Here is how the two modes map to ATM, POS and mobile.
Card present (CP) means the physical card is used at the point of the transaction: in an ATM or at a POS machine. Card not present (CNP) means the transaction is made without it, for example in a mobile app.
Most transactions work both ways. Balance Inquiry, Card to Card, Purchase, Bill Info, Save Payment and Cash In are supported card present and card not present.
A few belong to one mode. Name Inquiry, Wallet to Card and Card to Wallet are card not present only. Cash Out is card present only, because the customer is standing at the machine that dispenses the cash.
Knowing which mode a transaction runs in tells you which channel can offer it, and that is the first decision in any integration.
